Chester Police Chief Jack L. Houghlan, 57 died at 1:47 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19. 1997, in Manorial Hospital.
Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday in Grace Bible Church, with the rev. Jim Claycomb officiating.
Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.
Memorials can be made to Toys for Tots or the Shriners Hospital children,
Mr. Houghlan was chief of police in Chester for 15 years.
He started as an auxiliary policeman in 1970 and became chief on Feb. 1, 1982.
When he moved to Chester he was a General Telephone Co. supervisor for Southern Illinpois.
He was a Marine veteran and member of the Marine Corps Band.
He marched in the Rose Bowl Parade in 1960.
He was a member of the Marine Corps League, where he was a past commandant.
He was chairman of the Randolph County 911 Emergency Telephone System Board, Masonic Lodge 72 Scottish Rite Bodies and the Ainad Temple in East St. Louis.
He was active in Toys for Tots.
He served on the BAC school board police academy for several years.
He was a member of the Illinois Chief of Police Association, a nationwide organization headquartered in Florida, where he had been a past vice president.
He was a member of the Randolph County olice Association, where he was a past president, the American Legion in Steeleville, the Chester Moose Lodge and National Rifle Association.
He attended the First Christian Church in Chester.
He was born on Aug, 5, 1939, in Jonesboro, son of Edgar Leon and Wanda (Ray) Houghlan.
He married Janet Huie on Sept 1, 1961, in New Orleans. She survives.
Other survivors include his mother, Wanda Spurlock of Anna, two daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Mark Munster of Colleyville, Texas, and one son and daughter-in-law, Jack Raymond and Cheryi Houghlan of Chester, one half-brother Kenny Joiner of Anna; one half-sister Nancy Smith of Phoenix, his step-mother Opal Houghlan of Phoenix; mother-in-law Ruth "Tommie" Huie of DuQuoin and two grandchildren, Amy Munster of Colleyville and Marcus Buckles of Siler City, N. C.
His father preceded him in death.
Note: Jack attended Davie Grade School, Anna Junior High and Anna Jonesboro Community High and graduated with the class of 1958.
He played foodball and played in the A J Band.
